What is Reclaimed Teak Shiplap?

If you have watched any home improvement shows over the past few years, you understand the terms shiplap, barn wood and boat wood more than most. Popular shows like “Fixer-Upper”or “Flip or Flop,”  have used these terms and have created quite the demand for beautiful reclaimed siding, cladding, shiplap and boat wood. But are these different items or are they the same? For those of you off the cable networks and seem to be a little confused at the names, here’s a little tutorial.

At its heart, shiplap refers to a wooden board that’s most often associated with outdoor sheds and barns. The key feature that gives shiplap its name is what’s called a rabbet. This small groove cut into the top and bottom of the plank allows it to fit together with other boards creating a very tight seal.

The way the boards blend together with a slight reveal creates the signature appearance and it’s also very simple for any homeowner to install on their own. Shiplap doesn’t refer to the wood finish or appearance, just the construction. Our siding and paneling all are made from this construction, but each one has its own sweet spot.

Siding is most associated with outdoor use and tends to be thicker and more akin to dealing with all-day sun and changing weather conditions. Cladding and paneling tend to be a little thinner and more DIY friendly. These are perfect for interior accent walls, ceilings and furniture.

Finally our barn wood and boat wood offerings are our most requested. The boat wood either comes from actual boats or is recreated to have the same weathered appearance. The reason it is often recreated is that the reclaimed boat wood from other countries may have lead paint. If thats the case, we sand it if off and repaint the wood because there is no way we ever use anything with lead. It’s an extra step but one we feel is very important for our clients.

Shiplap Walls & Ceilings

Once only in-demand for exterior uses, shiplap is wildly popular right now for interior projects that homeowners want to tackle themselves or for a quick and inexpensive face lift to bonus rooms and offices. The beauty of its rustic charm and various textures has created a new demand for the product that comes in dozens of varieties.

At Indoteak Design, we have many different options when it comes to ceilings, soffits and walls. When we first started, we would often be asked if our flooring could be used for ceilings. The answer was yes and it works great! But there is some weight and price that we knew we could tune up if we created another product for wall use. When we designed our solid smooth paneling and smooth siding, we did so with ceilings and soffits in mind.
